
Founded in 1939 at 60 Kim Yam Road, the school was named Shiang Kai Sek Secondary School, which is currently known as Chung Cheng High School (Yishun).
Female students were only accepted as students after the World War II.
In the first national examination after the war, the school attained distinction among other schools in Singapore.As the student population increased incredibly, a piece of land at Goodman Road was bought,thus the founding of Chung Cheng High School (Main)
"1979 was a milestone year for the school as it became a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school offering both English and Chinese as first languages to Special Stream students.This helped strengthen Chung Cheng High School (Main)'s emphasis on bilingualism."

Due to the necessity of better facilities, the school embarked on an upgrading programme in the early 90s.The school undergo 3 phases of redevelopment in total.
In 1996, after performing consistently well in the GCE 'O' Level Examinations, the school achieved autonomous status.
'The Lake Odyssey', an extensive school production, depicted the school's values.This was only made possible from the strong support of the School Management Committee (SMC), alumni, as well as parents and students of both Chung Cheng High Schools.As the first school to put up a performance at Esplanade, it was indeed significant to the school.
The school was awarded the "School Distinction Award" in 2005 in recognition of the school's efforts, eventually sustaining achievements in students' outcomes in the 5 domains, namely moral, cognitive, physical, social & aesthetic.
The same year, the school broke history in the World's Longest Can-Chaining Project for charity in 2005, putting the school in the Guinness Book of Records.
The school received reaffirmation of its autonomous status and recertification for the Singapore Quality Class (SQC) in 2007.
Celebrating its 70th Anniversary with Zhang Shoushi Calligraphy and Chinese Painting Exhibition, Alumni Art Exhibition, Gold Tournament, Chung Cheng Literary Work Exhibition,Walkathon and the publication of "Zhongzheng Ren" - a compilation of stories depicting distinguished alumni members.On 27 June 2009, a grand reunion dinner, graced by then Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, was held at Suntec Singapore.
